How to Develop and Strengthen Your Self-Control

Self-control is the ability to control impulses and reactions, and is another name for self-discipline.
It is not some kind of negative and limiting behavior, as some people might think. When self-control is used wisely and with common sense, it becomes one of the most important tools for self improvement and for achieving success.
Self control is vital for overcoming obsessions, fears, addictions, and any kind of unsuitable behavior. It puts you in control of your life, your behavior, and your reactions. It improves your relationships, develops patience and tolerance, and is an important tool for attaining success and happiness.
In what way self-control helps you?
  • It keeps in check self-destructive, addictive, obsessive and compulsive behavior.
  • Gives you a sense of mastery over your life, and brings balance into your life.
  • Self-control helps to keep over-emotional responses in check or moderation.
  • Self-control eliminates the feeling helplessness and being too dependent on others.
  • It helps to manifest mental and emotional detachment, which contributes to peace of mind.
  • It enables to control moods and reject negative feelings and thoughts.
  • Self-control strengthens self-esteem, confidence, inner strength, self-mastery and willpower.
  • It enables you to take charge of your life.
  • It makes you a responsible and trustworthy human being.

Obstacles to self-control:

  • Lack of knowledge and understanding what self-control really is.
  • Strong and uncontrolled emotional responses.
  • Reacting to outside stimuli, without thinking first.
  • Lack of discipline and willpower.
  • Lack of the desire to change and improve.

  • Considering self-control as a limiting and unpleasant activity.
  • The belief that self control eliminates fun.
  • Lack of faith in oneself and in one's abilities.

Developing self control

1) First you need to identify in what areas of your life you need to gain more self-control. Where do you find yourself lacking in self-control?
Possible areas could be:
Eating
Shopping
Drinking
Work
Gambling
Smoking
Obsessive behavior
2) Try identifying the emotions that lack control, such as anger, dissatisfaction, unhappiness, resentment, pleasure or fear.
3) Identify the thoughts and beliefs that push you to behave in uncontrolled manner.
4) Several times a day, especially when you need to display self control, repeat for a minute or two one of the following affirmations:
  1. I am fully in control of myself.
  2. I have the power to choose my emotions and thoughts.
  3. Self-control brings me inner strength and leads me to success.
  4. I am in control of my reactions.
  5. I am in charge of my behavior.
  6. I am gaining control of my emotions.>
  7. I am the maser of my life.
  8. Day by day my ability to control my feelings and thoughts is increasing.
  9. Self-control is fun and pleasure.
5) Visualize yourself acting with self-control and self-restraint. Take one of the instances where you usually act with lack of control, and visualize that you are acting calmly and with self-mastery.
6) Your self control will improve considerably, if you work on developing and strengthening your willpower and self-discipline through appropriate exercises. This is actually the most important step for developing self control.
By developing and strengthening your willpower and self discipline, you develop and strengthen your self control.

TAKE BACK YOUR POWER 
There are people around us who will not stop trying ‪#‎ish‬.
You call a tete a tete and ask really what the problem is and they swear by all heavens they have no issues with you and try to tell you it’s in your mind, but at every turn you all but fall into a ditch they dug or a set up they spurn.
 You then apologize for whatever it is that is causing them the annoyance and inducing such a reaction towards you but they keep coming at you relentlessly with new improved bull *ish. You avoid them, stop all interactions but they mistake your silence for weakness. 
 Who are these people? They are those who spin tales to color you bad at your job, those who carry falsehood to the paparazzi, those who blinded by jealousy and the “who she think say she be syndrome” make it a priority on their agenda to put you in a poor light.  
Those that keep coming at you , coming at your family (the relentless side chick) or coming at your children (big mistake on their part) and all the constant annoyances that keep digging at your heels. 
 Let’s step it up a notch and go supernatural to include, the hex conjurers, the evil eye marauders and those who keep at you in your dreams.( Please stop running in your dreams. ….fight back). 
In Africa sometimes people could walk up to you as seers or prophets and tell you , “Look, you gonna die by Dec 14th”. Can you beat the stress that follows? You might even kick the bucket way before the purported expiry date from worrying about it. 
 If you can identify with this story so far take a deep breath and feel peace as you exhale. First of all you should feel flattered that so much time and energy is directed towards you by these weak willed individuals. However you do not want to be at the receiving end of such negativity so right at this moment as you exhale and breath in God’s peace, get ready to turn the tables around.  
Realize that your life is guided by an internal locus of control. IT’S ALL IN YOUR HANDS. No amount of water can sink a ship unless we let it in. In the physical, you need to be proactive in making the best choices preferably guided by the motto “for the greater good”. The consequences of such choices are attended with greater blessings.  
 On the emotional level, a positive mental attitude, guarding your thoughts and forever hoping for the best outcomes is your best bet. Whatever you expend your thoughts on is what you call into your sphere. Also remember your thoughts definitely impact on your biostatistics, heart rate, blood pressure , adrenalin levels, etc…., You are eventually what you THINK! 
On the spiritual level for those of us who believe in a higher power, key in. Be sure your hands and heart are clean and you feel no hate nor vengeance nor fear because all that only gives power to the negativity. All you want to do right now is return that energy to source and turn the table around. Meditation and prayer go a long way. For turbo charged results add some fasting to the mix. Psalm 35 v8. Psalm 109, Ephesians 6:17, (Hopefully I got those right).  
 When you have done that is in your power to do, let go and let God. Put it all out your mind and watch God’s hands move mightily on your behalf. When the changes come remember to send up a quiet “Thanks be to God”. May we all walk in peace and love and may Gods protection rest with us all as this year draws to a close. Namaste!!!

The wait is finally over as Africa’s biggest talent show, Nigeria’s Got Talent is back for another spectacular season.
The announcement was made at a star-studded media event on Thursday, October 3, 2013 at Get Arena, Lekki. Lagos with invited guests spanning the business, media and entertainment industries.
The world famous talent show which will be hosted this year by the enigmatic Andre Blaze, garnered rave reviews with its debut and is geared for an even more impressive outing this year with the organisers promising a plethora of surprises and the usual fun filled excitement for its loyal viewers.

10. Jose Chameleone
Jose (or Joe) Chameleone is a Ugandan artist who found his niche blending traditional Ugandan folk music, a bit of rumba and a heavy reggae influence. He sings in English, Swahili, and Luganda. His mansion outside of Kampala and four cars (including a Cadillac Escalade and a Benz) are evidence of his success, particularly with his hit, “Valu Valu.” He’s been credited with changing the face of music in Uganda, as well as making local music accessible to the rest of the world.
9. Banky W
Born Olubankole Wellington in the U.S., Banky W moved back to Nigeria and grew up in Lagos, where he began singing at an early age. He also started the Mr. Capable Foundation, an education charity that provides tuition scholarships for disadvantaged children.
8. Hugh Masekela

7. 2 Face Idibia

His most popular song, “African Queen,” took off after being featured in the movie “Phat Girlz” in 2006, but all of his five albums have been very well-received around the world. His wealth comes from various real estate investments across Nigeria, as well as the $80,000 he commands per show.
6. Fally Ipupa
Fally Ipupa, a former member of Quartier Latin International (along with Koffi Olomidé, to be mentioned later), went solo in 2006 and has been incredibly successful, both in his home country of the Democratic Republic of the Congo as well as internationally. With MTV Africa Music and Kora awards under his belt, he’s racked up clothing endorsement deals in Paris as well as high commissions for his shows across the world, which are almost always sold-out.
5. Salif Keita
Born and raised in Mali, singer and songwriter Salif Keita has been referred to as the “Golden Voice of Africa,” with his original take on Afro-pop music. Despite his royal heritage (he’s directly descended from Sundiata Keita, the founder of the Mali Empire), he chose a path of music, bucking the Malian caste system. But this means that he was loaded even before his music career took off, explaining his private island and properties across Europe.
4. Koffi Olomidé
Along with fellow Congolese star Fally Ipupa, Koffi Olomidé formed Quartier Latin as lead singer and vocalist before launching his solo career. Dubbing his style of music as tcha tcho, he considers it a blend of soukous music (dance music that originated from African rumba music). He’s notorious for taking on controversial subjects in his lyrics, which has led him to be widely praised and criticized worldwide.
Raking in over 100,000 euros per show, Olomidé is extremely popular across Africa and the world. One of his albums is listed in Robert Dimery’s book, “1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.”
3. D’banj
D’banj, aka the Koko Master, aka Dapo Daniel Oyebanjo, has been killing it in his native Nigeria and around the world since 2007, and was the first African artist who signed with the music label GOOD, owned by Kanye West. The recipient of countless awards, D’banj is known for his unique sound of dance music and Afro beats. He is involved in a variety of investments including a nightclub in Nigeria, brands such as Koko water, and was given his own reality show, “Koko Mansion.”
2. P-Square
P-Square is made up of identical twins, Peter and Paul Okoye, who began singing and dancing together back in their small Catholic high school in Jos, Nigeria. After forming the group in 2005, their music developed a devoted following, particularly in South Africa, and each album outsold the previous one. They were named Artists of the Year at the 2010 Kora Awards and now bring in more than $150,000 per show. Best of all, their shared home is worth more than $3 million and has been dubbed “Squareville.” Talk about product placement!

Not surprisingly, Youssou N’dour brings it home in the No. 1 spot. This Senegalese singer is widely considered the most famous singer alive in Senegal and much of Africa. His style of music is known as mbalax, a mix of Senegalese traditional music in the Serer language and various styles fromaround the world including Cuban rumba, hip hop, jazz, and soul.
With millions around the world in his fan base, he is now the owner of the biggest media house in Senegal (complete with radio and TV stations) and was appointed tourism and culture minister in 2012. More importantly, before K’naan had “Waving Flag” in 2010, N’dour was responsible for the 1998 FIFA World Cup national anthem, “La Cour des Grands,” along with Axelle Red.
